Ill sing for
you is a fascinating documentary about the life and music of Malian
bluesman, Boubacar Traore, known as « KarKar » in his home
country. There is a claming, hypnotic flow to the film... With a generous
serving of music, fantastic black and white photos and newsreels, and
vibrantly filmed footage of modern-day Mali, director Jacques Sarasin
tracks Traoré's journey in this hypnotically beautiful film.
It is difficult
to describe a film of such enduring magic. In one scene Boubacar Traoré
and Ali Farka Touré walk together across some open ground in
Niafunké, Farka Tourés home village, playing their
guitars as they walk, the haunting, revolving rhythms of desert blues. Sarasin's sensitive
portrait of KarKar is also a crash-course in Bambara culture and history
Scintillating music
docu about African guitar great Boubacar Traore obviously appealed to
tune-minded Jonathan Demme, since he's taken presentation credit on
"I'll Sing for You." |
